The holidays are approaching, and they will undoubtedly look quite different this year. It’s been a tough year for most people; we find ourselves missing family, loved ones, and social calls. For many, the holidays are a time to travel and visit those whom they love and may not get to see as often as they would like. The COVID-19 pandemic will make this holiday season particularly challenging. For the sake of safety, many families will forgo traveling and gatherings.
I think it’s worthwhile to note that even during a pandemic, etiquette is still essential. The definition of etiquette is politeness, consideration, thoughtfulness, good manners, and behavior. Proper etiquette dictates that we should be considerate of and thoughtful as to how our actions might affect others. That being said, the disappointment and inconveniences we are experiencing are worth it to keep those we love safe. Just know that all is not lost. We have so many resources with the technology we have today. Families have the option of meeting virtually.
We should remember that different can still be festive, fun, and memorable. All we need is a little creativity and ingenuity. Not visiting family and friends in person doesn’t mean that we can’t visit at all. Luckily, we have the option of visiting virtually. Several popular virtual platforms would facilitate a virtual family meeting. One of the more recognized platforms, Zoom, has announced that they will be lifting the 40-minute limit just for Thanksgiving. This adjustment will allow families to celebrate without time constraints. Although it won’t be quite what we’re accustomed to, this holiday could be a perfect opportunity to slow down and connect with family. With less rushing and busyness, we can have more meaningful conversations with our spouses, children, parents, and other important people in our lives. This Thanksgiving holiday is an excellent opportunity to engage with our children in meaningful ways.
A little planning can help your family to enjoy themselves. Now that we don’t have to worry about travel time taking up a sizable amount of our holiday, we can think of creative ways to increase engagement and ensure a good time is had by all. Once everyone agrees on a time, all that’s left is selecting activities and games. I’ve seen suggestions such as charades, Pictionary, Trivia games, and a few others. This holiday could also be a great time to have the family elders tell stories about their lives, things they have been a part of, and experiences. The Zoom platform allows recording; that way, it could be a keepsake for the family.
